Storj is a decentralized cloud service, that uses blockchain technology for distributing parts of a file between chain members. It is an open source project written on Golang by a team from Atlanta, USA. The project was first announced in April 2014, but it is still in alpha development stage, launch of Storj network is planned for 2019.
The main purpose of Storj was to create a resilient, secure and cheap cloud storage. Files you upload on Storj network are shredded into pieces (shards),Show more [+] encrypted and distributed between nodes of the blockchain. Unlike torrents, only the owner of the file has its full copy, and all the other members have only encrypted parts of the file. Nodes, who keep other members’ files, get some small reward in Storj tocken (STORJ) for renting out their hard drive space.
Storj works in two modes: as a cloud storage ($0.015 GB/month) and as a bandwidth ($0.05 GB/downloaded). Cloud storage can be used to back up your important files. Bandwidth for sharing media content or large file transfers.
