Reading the total market cap

The total market cap is the quickest read on the size of the crypto market, but it is dominated by a handful of assets: Bitcoin alone is more than half of it, and the two largest stablecoins add a large slice that does not move with prices at all. A rising total with falling Bitcoin dominance means the gains are spreading into smaller coins; a rising total with rising dominance means Bitcoin is doing the lifting. For whether a move is broad or narrow day to day, see Market Weather.

Frequently asked questions

What is the total crypto market cap?

The total crypto market cap is the combined market capitalisation of every tracked cryptocurrency: each coin's circulating supply multiplied by its price, summed. It is the single number most often used for the size of the crypto market, and it moves with prices far more than with new supply.

Why do sites show different total market caps?

Each data provider tracks a different set of assets and treats stablecoins, wrapped tokens and thinly traded coins differently, so totals differ by a few percent. Coinlib's live figure is CoinMarketCap's global market cap. Read the chart for direction and scale rather than for an exact, universal number.

What does Bitcoin dominance mean?

Bitcoin dominance is Bitcoin's market cap as a percentage of the total. When it rises, money is concentrating in Bitcoin; when it falls, smaller coins are gaining share — the condition traders call altcoin season. Ethereum dominance is the same measure for Ethereum.

How often is this chart updated?

Methodology

Headline figures are CoinMarketCap's global metrics, refreshed every five minutes. Earlier points are reconstructed from the daily market caps Coinlib stores for each coin it tracks, summed; they run within about 2% of the global figure, and dominance within about a point. Days with incomplete coin coverage are left out rather than estimated, and volume is shown only for recorded days, because summed per-coin volume double-counts and is not comparable.
