Helium IOT

IOT is the subnetwork token for the IoT portion of the Helium network — the LoRaWAN coverage used by low-power sensors and devices. Helium restructured from a single token into separate subnetworks, each with its own token, so IOT rewards hotspots providing IoT coverage while other Helium subnetworks handle mobile coverage.

Helium adopted a subDAO structure so each type of wireless coverage could have its own incentives and governance rather than sharing one reward pool. IOT covers the LoRaWAN IoT network specifically. Rewards earned in IOT can be exchanged into HNT, Helium's primary token, through the protocol's treasury mechanism, linking the subnetworks economically.

Helium migrated its network from its own purpose-built layer-1 to Solana in 2023, so IOT is issued as an SPL token and its transfers settle on Solana with fees paid in SOL. The migration let Helium reuse Solana's validator set, wallets and tooling instead of maintaining independent chain infrastructure.

IOT is distributed to operators of Helium IoT hotspots that provide LoRaWAN coverage and transfer device data, with rewards tied to proof of coverage and data transfer rather than to computational mining. This makes it a physical-infrastructure reward token: earning it requires deploying and running real radio hardware in a location the network values.
