Celo Euro

Celo Euro, ticker CEUR, is a stablecoin issued on the Celo network and designed to track the value of the euro. It is created through Celo's on-chain stability mechanism rather than by a bank holding euro deposits, which makes it a protocol-issued stablecoin in the same family as Celo's dollar-denominated counterpart.

Celo's stability protocol lets CEUR be minted and redeemed against a diversified on-chain reserve, with an exchange mechanism that creates arbitrage incentives whenever the token trades away from the euro. If CEUR trades below the euro it can be redeemed for reserve assets; if above, new supply can be minted. This two-way pressure pulls it back.

A custodial euro stablecoin is backed by euro deposits held by a regulated issuer that processes redemptions directly. CEUR's backing is instead a crypto-asset reserve governed on chain, so its stability depends on reserve composition, collateralisation and protocol governance rather than on an issuer's bank balance.

CEUR gives Celo users a euro-denominated unit for payments, savings and DeFi without converting to a dollar stablecoin first. Celo's design also allows fees to be paid in its stablecoins rather than only in the native token, which is aimed at making transfers workable for users who hold only stable assets.
