I tried purchasing something earlier today from a vendor who accepts Monero and uses Coinpay to set up payments. I sent the exact amount to the address listed on Coinpay from my Monero wallet and I have the TX time, ID, key, destination address, everything to prove I sent it to them. They claim to not have received the payment, yet the Monero is gone from my wallet. They ignored my support ticket and reiterated that they had not received the funds despite the fact that I have proof that they did. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Am I fucked or what?
1) Use Monero to purchase things and encourage merchant adoption
2) Mention Monero via "word of mouth"
3) Video marketing (Youtube, commercials etc)
4) Graphic design – create new Monero Logos & Imagery
5) Spread Monero Stickers, images (or Posters) around your locality
6) Stamp Monero marketing campaign (https://stampmonero.com)
7) Wear Monero Merchandise (T-shirts, Hats etc.)
8) On your social media and gaming accounts: change your username & profile pictures to a Monero alias (Youtube, Facebook, Reddit, Twitch, watsapp, Twitter, Steam etc.)
9) Post high quality articles & content on online communities & forums that educate and inform others about Monero
10) Attend local Monero meet-ups (or events)
11) Target Wealthy Investors (ULTRA HIGH NET WORTH)
12) Contact Websites & Media to request they contribute to Monero's coverage
13) Protect Monero's REPUTATION (privacy is NOT a crime)
!!Feel free to add any ideas below in comments, thank you!!
Monero is obviously an amazing project and the future of both the concept of money and an upcoming era of privacy computing. My question for the community is if Monero is aiming to be a storage of value or a transaction currency? The infinite supply of coins implies it's usage will be for transactions, but the way the coins are released into the circulating supply also indicate that it could be a storage of value.
Hello, I am looking to invest in Bytecoin. Everything from the subreddit says it is very similar to this coin but the volume and price. Please let me know why that coin is worth next to nothing while this coin is so much more.
I currently have a Chromebook and no access to other computers. I've read a few things that seems to indicate that the upcoming Ledger/Monero integration will require interfacing with the Monero Wallet CLI. This would be unlike accessing other currencies through the Ledger like Bitcoin or Ether which just requires a Chrome extension.
Is this correct or am I misunderstanding? Will I need to have access to a computer that is running the Monero Wallet CLI in order to use the Ledger integration?
So far using Monero on Tails hasn't been a very smooth experience for me at all. Biggest problem I have encountered are the regularly appearing Torsocks errors which lead to problems when using the monero-wallet-cli. I've tried on a laptop and on a faster Desktop-PC; both with the same results.
To sum up how I've set myself up:
Downloaded blockchain via MacBook onto SSD; transferred lmdb folder to external HDD; symlinked lmdb folder from HDD to /.bitmonero/lmdb folder on Tails machine; launched monerod with the sudo iptables stuff on port 18081; block-sync-size set to 5sudo iptables -I OUTPUT 2 -p tcp -d 127.0.0.1 -m tcp --dport 18081 -j ACCEPT DNS_PUBLIC=tcp torsocks ./monerod --p2p-bind-ip 127.0.0.1 --no-igd --rpc-bind-ip 127.0.0.1 --block-sync-size 5
In this pastebin you'll find how my procedure looked like. I could have posted the text here also, but reddit would make the formatting disappear. This post is to be read in this order ;)
Additional info: Tails 3.6.1; Helium-Hydra I can post the wallet-cli-log too, if that's secure to do so. It says stuff like "Unexpected recv fail" pretty often and some other things as well.
As of right now I cannot transfer XMR anywhere without using my MacBook to submit the offline-Tails-signed-Transaction. My goal is to be able to to every monero-related thing via Tails ONLY. Has anyone ever managed to do just that? With that I mean the following:
I would have to be using my MacBook to create and submit the tx if Monero didn't work on Tails, which isn't really favorable as I aim to not have my IP or anything linked to the transaction itself, which would happen as I don't have any stealth/OpSec on my MacBook at all. When it comes to the monero client for MacBook: works very well! Big thanks to the developers for that.

The hole community is growing and most of them don't speak english fluently and might be having some difficulties on answering some questions regarding monero. As you know, most of the monero websites are written in english. The official getmonero.org has the spanish language activated, so more people can now change to spanish (it still needs more translations, but A LOT has already been done, thanks to contributors). Is not that easy to find answers in any other language so..., working with /u/Erciccione in the Monero Localization Group in taiga.getmonero.org anyone can contribute to translate Monero to any language. If you, or if you know of anyone interested in contributing to the Monero Localization let them know they can do it by creating an account on the taiga.getmonero.org website, and by sending a message to the Monero Localization project with their interest in getting involved. There are many projects in which anyone can get involved no matter their knowledge. The title says Spanish Monero Localization Group and is not intended to disorient anyone but I wrote this message for anyone reading the post, in order to get you a mayor idea of what is going around. If you would like to create a specific language group, you can copy paste this message or just propose it in the Monero Localization Group. We are searching and gathering the spanish contributers, so, if you would like to get involved, learn new topics, educate yourself, translate, and if you speak spanish, send a message to the Monero Localization group in taiga.getmonero.org. We are happy to have you in the community as a contributor.
I'm on a testnet right now so no real funds are stuck luckily.
But i followed this guide to spend monero from a multisig wallet: https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/5646/how-to-use-monero-multisignature-wallets-2-2-2-3
And i keep getting this -> "Error: internal error: Multisig wallets cannot spend non rct outputs"
Is there anything I can do to fix this so I can then sign the transaction and send it off to the blockchain?
This is in a 2/2 wallet btw
Yesterday, Reddit banned a number of subreddits related to trading guns, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, prostitution and other naughty stuff. This came as a surprise to the moderators of these subs. The ban includes discussion groups that didn't allow trading at all, like /r/gundeals and our friends at /r/darknetmarkets. It also includes exchanging craft beers without any payment.
As of today, users may not use Reddit to solicit or facilitate any transaction or gift involving certain goods and services, including:
As usual, the admins didn't specify which subs were banned, leaving users to play a guessing game.
This ban might be motivated by new legislation in the US called FOSTA, which makes websites criminally liable for user-generated content if that content could be interpreted as advertising goods and services illegally. Would complaining to Reddit admins do any good at this stage? I don't know, I feel numb and tired, I just wanted to write this down because many Monero users are involved.
At which point does the regulation come so close that we should start looking for a decentralized alternative? I like using Reddit so much that I removed the app from my phone for being addictive. I don't want to join the trash heap of undesirables on Voat, and blockchain-based alternatives aren't ready yet. But they will be coming this year.
And are there still legal clearnet websites out there where we can find out what darknet market users expect from cryptocurrencies? /r/DarkNetMarketsNoobs/, /r/Drugs and /r/opiates are still up so far, and the placeholder at https://voat.co/v/DNM is going to be activated now.
Let's say my wallet has 5 XMR in it and the wallet is old. It has many small transactions going back a year.
If I restored it from seed and chose block height from 3 months ago, would it show up just some o the balance, like 2.5 XMR or something?
Then I spend 1 XMR when the wallet has finished scanning (out of the 2.5 XMR it found). Then I delete the wallet and restore it from the time I first used it? Or full blockchain rescan.
What would happen? Would I mess up my wallet?
Could someone who understands the tech better help out...
The latest news is that with the Bitcoin private blockchain (and just about every other blockchain), individuals or governments have embedded links to child porn in the blockchain which could effectively kill Bitcoin in many countries due to child porn laws - where it is possibly illegal to download the Bitcoin blockchain.
Is Monero's blockchain immune to this?
The very notion of governments banning privacy coins seems like nonsense for the most part. They can't ban a particular coin because a fork could just be created. They can't ban the underlying tech either. How do you ban RingCT, stealthaddresses, zksnarks, etc.? It wouldn't be possible.
Not to mention we saw how the previous attempted ban on cryptography went.
In addition, the supposed motivation behind any ban would be to prevent the use of using "untraceable" cryptocurrencies due to their illicit use in money laundering and tax evasion. But in order for any crypto to be used in money laundering or tax evasion, you'd still need a crypto --> fiat gateway where you could cash out large amounts of money while avoiding detection/identification, and currently, there's no quick, solid, efficient way to do that.
To be sure, govts aren't worried about normies getting away with a $1k tax-free profit on cryptos; they're worried about the big players who want to cash out 6 figures without paying taxes. But people who have that kind of cash don't need to cash it out in places like the US.
They'll establish residency in a place like Puerto Rico which currently has an agreement with the US government such that if you establish residency there, you don't need to pay capital gains taxes.
Privacy coins aren't the keystone to tax evasion and money laundering.
